Gulf red grouper returns to the menu

August 30, 2011

Red grouper populations are back to healthy levels in the Gulf, and after four years, Richard Gonzmart is able to put red grouper back on the menu at his six family owned restaurants.

In a commitment to sustainability, Gonzmart removed red grouper from the menu in 2007 when it was apparent that overfishing was causing a decline to the red grouper population.   However, the red grouper IFQ, which was modeled after the Gulf Red Snapper IFQ, reversed overfishing and the population has recovered so much that the annual catch limits have increased.

Along with reversing overfishing, the IFQ also allows a year round season for commercial fishermen.   This means that fresh and local red grouper is available to restaurants at any time of the year!
